Yahoo on Thursday confirmed the launch of its new search SMS service, which would let users obtain search results from their mobile phones.

SMS, or Short Message Service, would allow users to send a text message to grab specific search results in specified locations such as weather, stock quotes, restaurants and other such information.

Yahoo also said it’s extending its WAP, or Wireless Application Protocol, for WAP 2.0-enabled devices.

The company said its using shortcuts to display results instead of web links, which would make the information easier to glance over on majority of the mobile devices. This service is already offered through Yahoo Search, which can be accessed through desktop browsers.

"We're able to leverage content from across the Yahoo network and use it to cerate shortcuts online, and now we've extended them to SMS search and Yahoo Search on Mobile," said Mihir Shah, Director, Search Product Management, Yahoo.

Shah added that users must type in the code "92466," which spells out "Yahoo" before submitting a search query. Results are currently available for eight search shortcuts and not for general keyword searches.
