Lycos Europe, founders of the "Make Love Not Spam" initiative, has pulled their bandwidth-targeting screensaver from the site. The reason for such action, claims Lycos Europe, is they have to manage their hosting and management issues after 100,000 downloads, which literally disabled the company’s website. Lycos Europe received huge download requests after much criticism from media in the past few days. Currently, the company does not know when it will offer its spam-targeting screensaver to users again, but does have a "stay tuned…" message on its site. The initiative targets spam sending web servers and with the screensaver it decreases 5% bandwidth to the servers, in return delaying millions of spam e-mails. Thus far, it has managed to take down two websites that were located in China. Lycos Europe wants to make sending spam expensive for spammers. Lycos Europe is not a subsidiary of Lycos, Inc., which is based in the United States. Lycos Europe manages around 40 million e-mail accounts in European countries. F-Secure, a Finnish anti-virus company, discouraged users from taking part in this initiative, as it may contain legal issues in the future. Others are also criticizing Lycos Europe, labeling their initiative as immoral.
