Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software maker, is planning on introducing an enterprise version of its Windows Desktop Search application that’s designed and targeted at IT managers rather than standard PC users.

The new application from the world’s largest software maker is expected to debut later this week at the IT Forum event in Barcelona, Spain. The enterprise version of the company’s Desktop Search application will work with Windows 2000 and Windows XP and can index and retrieve over 200 types of file formats on network drives as well as personal computers, said Heather Friedland, Product Planner, Windows Desktop Search, Microsoft Corp.

Microsoft said Windows Desktop Search will later gain the capability to index and find information that’s stored in Windows Live based products. The timeframe on when the update will take place was not presented.

The company also pointed out that the application can be managed via systems management tools such as Microsoft’s Systems Management Server, and has options for establishing policy settings for the application.

Another interesting option, although in Beta, is MSN Search Toolbar, which lets users view search listings within Outlook.

The application is available for download immediately.
