Yahoo Inc. on Wednesday introduced a new web search technology known as "deep" search. Under this technology, Yahoo said it will crawl subscription based websites such as LexisNexis and store its data on Yahoo servers, only to make it available later on should the user is interested in paying for it. Users that have already paid for the content, however, would be able to see the content instantly. Yahoo said it will provide content from Consumer Reports, The Wall Street Journal Online, The New England Journal of Medicine and Forrester Research Inc. There’s not a monetary gain from publishers, said Yahoo. The online search company said it hopes to gather a database of online subscribers in exchange of the reading material from the aforementioned content providers. Yahoo further added that content providers such as Factiva and LexisNexis with pay-as-you-go al carte service would be added and crawled in the upcoming weeks as well. Yahoo concluded by saying that it had started a content acquisition program more than a year ago, and would add more sources in the future. This comes as a new strategy from Yahoo in order to gain an edge over Google, MSN and Ask Jeeves. |
