Nintendo, right after Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 announcements, also went ahead and introduced its next-generation gaming console, codenamed Revolution. Although Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will debut later in the holiday season, Sony and Nintendo will wait till 2006 to bring their products to the market. According to Nintendo, its Revolution gaming console is about the size of a stack of three DVD cases with nothing physical that particularly sticks out. Nintendo said its gaming console will only use wireless controllers for game pads, and the unit itself will either stand vertically or sit flat. Similar to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Nintendo’s Revolution will also have backwards compatibility with previous Game Cube titles on mini-discs. The gaming console will play DVD movies, a common feature in all three consoles. Nintendo also informed that its Revolution will connect to the Internet for online play via a free Internet based player. The company said it will offer titles ranging from its classic arcade games like Donkey Kong to the latest. When asked to comment on the overall power of the system in comparison to its competition, Nintendo said its gaming system is not all about power, but more about delivery. It said Revolution will do everything that you might want it to. Industry analysts that were present at E3 said developers will not have too much of a difficult time coding for Revolution, since it will offer enough performance to upcoming titles without making drastic changes to the code. The pricing and set date for Revolution has not been set yet. |
