Ken Kutaragi, an Engineer for Sony Entertainment and one of the developers of the PlayStation line of products, attacked Microsoft’s Xbox 360 by labeling it as Xbox 1.5.

In an exclusive interview with PC Watch, a Japanese media publication, he said Microsoft’s Xbox 360 is merely a general-purpose computer that does everything while Sony’s PlayStation 3 is a supercomputer that does everything far better than competing products.

He said just by adding more resolution and graphics power to a machine a company can’t expand the gaming segment.

Sony America’s President, Kaz Hirai, also called Microsoft’s Xbox 360 as Xbox 1.5 at E3.

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all had their next generation gaming consoles on showcase at this year’s E3 gaming expo. While Microsoft was the most vocal about its gaming console, Sony also had technical demos on hand to thoroughly display the power of PlayStation 3 to the crowd of industry leaders and media. Nintendo, however, was the least vocal about its Revolution gaming console.

Microsoft plans to bring its Xbox 360 to market by holiday season this year, while Sony and Nintendo will wait until 2006 before retailing their consoles.
