At this year’s E3 gaming expo, all three-console makers including Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo introduced their next generation consoles to the world. Microsoft was the most open about its Xbox 360 and is doing everything it can to persuade buyers for the time when the console actually hits retail channels. Sony also released quite a few details on its PlayStation 3 architecture while Nintendo released very limited information on its Revolution gaming console. While Microsoft is readying to bring its Xbox 360 by the holidays season this year, both Sony and Nintendo will wait till next year to retail their products. According to Microsoft, this should give the company enough leverage to beat Sony Entertainment, which is currently the leader in gaming consoles. David Cole, President, DFC Intelligence Market Research Group, suggested various things for each manufacturer in order to ensure their success. When Nintendo commented that they will also target mature gamers with its Revolution, Cole said Nintendo can possibly do it, but it will be tough due to its market position. Commenting on Microsoft’s strategy to beat Sony with Xbox 360, Cole said that might not happen once the console ships. Since there are incompatibilities and minor issues with first generation products, majority of the gamers may wait till the second generation before actually purchasing their consoles. According to Cole, the second generation may hit the retail shelves right when Sony and Nintendo launch their own gaming products, which puts Microsoft in the same boat as its competition. Furthermore, Cole commented on the general direction of the gaming industry. According to him, the success of consoles will not depend on exclusive titles this around but the product’s features and hard-hitting titles (similar to Halo that made Xbox rather popular). He said gamers may not utilize or understand the potential of their gaming console at first, but overtime they will realize the power these consoles have. Cole was skeptical throughout his statement, stating that while all the claims imitate a breakthrough in the console market, their potential is yet to be seen. |
