Infineon, IBM and Macronix recently announced a partnership to work on a new type of memory standard called Phase-Change memory or PCM. Phase-Change memory is a new standard that will allow storage of data on a special material, which changes its structure from amorphous to a crystalline instead of the standard electrical charges that are currently being used. All three companies said they are dedicating a team of 20-25 researchers on this project. The research will take place at IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, and at IBM’s Almaden Research Lab in San Jose, California. Even though it’s currently in immature stage, the technology could operate at higher speeds, store high-density data, and keep the data safe even after the power is interrupted or cut off. The three partners said once the technology is ready it could possibly be used in a wide array of applications including computer servers to consumer electronics.
