Three of the most influential companies in innovation and product architecture announced the result of their combined efforts for the past four years at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco, California today. The companies excitingly introduced a Cell chip, which is based on nine cores, as apposed to dual core, which is the current topic of discussion. The aforementioned companies dubbed the Cell chip as being a "supercomputer on chip" for the Home Entertainment market. While IBM, Sony and Toshiba were busy with the launch of their Cell chip, Intel was also present and introduced their dual core microprocessors at the conference as well. Cell chips will allow intensive data throughput between the system to the chip without any lag time, at least in today’s applications. According to the three partners, the Cell chip is a highly efficient package that will easily allow users to multithread without facing performance hits. While industry analysts warned Intel’s status in the Home Entertainment market, Intel said IBM, Sony and Toshiba will have to wait for software to catch-up to their chip before it makes sense for consumers to think about the technology. According to analysis reports, the introduction of Cell chip could prove to be quite devastating to Intel and its Home Entertainment market. Home
