Intel Corp., world’s largest chipmaker, announced its plans to introduce 64-bit capable microprocessors in the market today. After waiting for nearly 18 months after its rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) introduced its line of 64-bit capable microprocessors, the Athlon 64; Intel finally believes it’s the right time to bring in their 64-bit desktop products to consumers.

Intel wanted to bring 64-bit microprocessors to the market after software was ready to take advantage of its enhanced architecture. And although, Microsoft’s 64-bit Windows XP still isn’t in the market, the chipmaker feels this to be the right time.

The 64-bit microprocessors will carry a 600 series codename and will add on to the current Pentium 4 product line.

Although Intel failed to comment on this, sources outside the company reported that Intel has filed for trademark of its new logo "Intel Inside" and Roman numeral "VIIV" (possibly hinting on the series 4 and series 6 name sets), which Intel should launch with its new 64-bit microprocessors.
