World’s most visited site and a well-known online company, Yahoo, has purchased a photo-managing firm Flickr to further strengthen its position in the online realm.

Flickr will join Yahoo’s latest multimedia/content sharing product line after it’s out of Beta stages. Thus far, Yahoo has Blogosphere and Yahoo 360 that let’s users share multimedia content with other.

Flickr will give users the choice to share, edit and organize photos. Additionally, users will also have the ability to comment, place notes and tag images via the service. The images can either be from a personal computer or a plethora of other devices such as camera phones.

"Flickr has a strong, active online audience and innovative technology, such as tagging and mobile blogging capabilities, that will help us develop next-generation Web services for our customers," said Joanna Stevens, Spokesperson, Yahoo (Source: NewsFactor).

According to Yahoo, Flickr will remain independent until the service is out of beta. Other than that, the company decline to disclose further details of the acquisition.

Industry analysts from Gartner believe this to be the right strategy for individual companies as well as users who may be new to such technologies.

Yahoo will compete against Google’s Picasa 2, a photo management software, but Yahoo may do it one step better.
