Page 2 of 5 Exterior: From the looks of it, the Hi-Fi appears stunning. The same iPod white, super solid construction and minimalist design, the hallmark of all Apple products. The front grille is removable, and frankly, it looks a lot better when it’s off. It looks every bit as muscular as it is. In our test lab, the grill stays permanently off. But then we like to see the speaker cones vibrate as they go about belting stunning sound. The corners of the device have handles carved out, which makes it pretty easy to carry the device, although with a weight of 6.6kg (without battery, 7.6kg otherwise), you probably won’t be carrying it around too often. The speakers look like a 2.1 system packed into one with a big central woofer (130mm) coupled with the two smaller 80mm wide range drivers. The rear panel is again minimalist. It houses a single 3.5mm jack that accepts both analog cables as well as S/PDIF optical digital cables. This is great because at least you are not limited to using a $350 sound system with just your iPod. If you own a 30GB iPod, then your "accessory" is already more expensive than the product itself. Giving it audio inputs for other devices ensures that the Hi-Fi is a product in itself and not just an accessory for the iPod. You can purchase the speaker system even if you don’t own the iPod. Apple doesn’t bundle the cable though, so you might have to buy that separately. |
