Page 2 of 6 Product Analysis: Philips’ GoGear HDD1630 is a very sleek device with a black and glossy exterior. All standout buttons are located throughout the device, which makes it look rather impressive. What’s amazing to note is the overall presentation of the HDD1630. This is perhaps one of the greatest looking devices in the market. With sleekness comes drawbacks; we’ll get into that later in the evaluation. The front of the device has absolutely no buttons whatsoever for navigation and this only adds to the amazing exterior of the unit. The left edge of the MP3 player contains the hold slider, power and playlist buttons that go well with the black color scheme of the device. The two metallic strips that hold these buttons most certainly add class to the product, a rare commodity in considerably affordable products. The right strip contains the volume up/down, menu and view buttons. The bottom and top sides, however, blend well with the suave color scheme with a dock connector at the bottom for battery recharging and microphone and headphones input at the top. Going back to the faceplate of HDD1630, as we mentioned, there are no standout buttons. How can you operate a device without buttons? Well, Philips is one of the few companies to have adopted LightTouch technology. We saw a live demonstration of the technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year in January. The concept behind the technology is to let companies configure consumer electronics without actually integrating physical buttons. As a result, you simply need to slide you finger on the slider (programmed with play/pause functionality) to navigate. Likewise, forward and backward are programmed with LightTouch technology as well. Tap on the buttons and you are ready to go.
