The ability to listen to music throughout the house is an audio enthusiast's dream. Sonos, a privately operated firm, has launched a new product that promises an innovative way of listening to music. The Sonos Digital Music System is a product that will awe many audio enthusiasts with its features. Please keep in mind that this is a preview of the Sonos Digital Music System. This is more of a paper launch on Sonos' part and the real product is expected to ship in September. Until then, Sonos has provided us with valuable information and preliminary specifications and features of the Sonos Digital Music System. After Sonos starts to retail the product in the market, we will get the evaluation unit in our lab and do a full coverage of the product. After discussing with Sonos about the product and receiving some detailed information, we have a good feeling about this product, but the actual performance can't be tested until September. With the preview facts out of the way, let's begin...

We have not received any specific information as to what will be included in the package, but we are assuming that standard things such as the user's manual, an installation guide, and connection cables are the least we can expect.

Basic Understanding...

We will start off by giving you a general idea of how the Sonos Digital Music System works. All you need is a PC with all your music, one pair of 2.1 speakers, at least a single ZonePlayer, and a wireless controller. With a pre-configured wireless network, the user will be able to place a ZonePlayer anywhere in the house, connect the speakers to the back of the ZonePlayer, and use the wireless controller to switch between the songs. Since the wireless controller supports upto 32 ZonePlayers, you will have the option to listen to 32 different songs in 32 different areas with 32 seperate ZonePlayers. The interesting and innovative part is that all 32 ZonePlayers can be controlled with just one controller from anywhere in the house. We are still not sure about the wireless and wired networking configurations and how the ZonePlayers and the wireless controller exactly interact with the PC, but as we get more information from Sonos we will update this preview.
