Product Analysis: External

The top of the Transformer features an 80mm exhaust fan and a few external ports. We should note that the connectors for the USB and audio ports are very well arranged and were very easy to connect to the motherboard. We like seeing the external ports on top rather than on the side because you never know if the case is going to be on the right side or the left side of a desk.

Most manufacturers have been adding an external Firewire (IEEE 1394) port but for whatever reason, the Transformer doesn’t include one. It would be nice to have one but since Firewire isn’t used that much, we doubt most people will notice.

The side panel features two 80mm LED fans and a lock. The lower fan blows directly where the AGP card fits and the upper fan cools the microprocessor. They both feature 4-pin molex connectors and RPM monitoring if your motherboard supports it.

The lock is fairly sturdy and will prevent theft of valuable equipment and data as long as the thief doesn’t make off with your entire machine.
