(Column) - I was thinking: What are some of the key things we want from a notebook? A slim form factor? Lightweight? Energy efficient? If we let the LED wizards have their way, we just might get slimmer, lighter and more energy efficient notebooks than before.

The technology is not that far off either, as the latest development news is that manufacturers are ready to integrate LEDs in LCD panels as backlights starting Q2 ’06.

What I would like to see, however, is OLEDs making their way to notebooks, or at least mainstream usage. We’ve all read about the keyboard based on OLED technology where the keys light up differently for different functions depending on the applications you are in. For instance, if you want to type in Russian, not only will your language change in Microsoft Word, but even your keys will display the Russian alphabet.
