(First Look) – Logitech recently introduced two mice to the gaming community based on laser technology, the G5 and G7 models. The relationship between the G5 and G7 is similar to the MX series where Logitech introduced variants of mice to hybridize price points. For instance, the MX900 cost way more than MX518 (not related) or other corded versions of parallel mice. The key differences between the aforementioned models are their price tag, quite obviously, and the fact that G5 is a corded predecessor to the G7. According to Logitech, both mice feature a 2000 dpi laser engine, "An ultra-high resolution engine churns images at an astounding 6.4 megapixels per second. A massive (30-pixel by 30-pixel) sensor array and precision laser technology provides best-in-class performance and tracking." Moreover, they both have gliding Polytetrafluoroethylene gaming feet for smooth operation in addition to in-game switching. Logitech states, "The G5 (and G7) provides instant access to three sensitivity levels— 400 dpi, 800 dpi, and 2000 dpi—before driver installation. Shift from pixel-precise targeting to fast-twitch maneuvers, without pausing the action." Variations aside, the G5 and G7 models have unique features of their own than a dull corded vs. wireless comparison. While the G5 supports adjustable weight cartridges, the G7 packs in two additional Lithium-Ion batteries for non-stop gaming. Additionally, the G7 has a battery-level indicator and full speed USB technology, which is "4X faster than conventional mice, USB delivers blazing speed and instant acceleration. With a 5X** stronger connection, 2.4 GHz wireless "bulletproofs" the G7 against lags and interference dropouts," according to Logitech. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price of the G5 is $69.99 while the G7 is set to retail at $99.99. Initial Thoughts: The prices are actually quite reasonable considering Logitech’s history of new product announcements and corresponding price tags. If you wait a few months, the prices are bound to drop significantly. Furthermore, you’ll notice that prices are defined based on features and specifications, and one of the cost factors for G7 is its wireless capability in addition to two Lithium-Ion batteries. Regardless, it’s obvious that if you are on a budget or if wireless isn’t your choice for gaming, your best bet would be the G5. We’ve recently gotten both mice in our lab for performance testing, so check back soon for in-depth reviews featuring the G5 and G7 mice exclusively.
