The MX610 laser cordless mouse is based on Logitech’s 2.4GHz wireless technology that provides 5x the range than traditional wireless technologies and is reliable enough to prevent unnecessary interference, which would otherwise result in a connection loss. This technology has been implemented in a variety of other Logitech products, so the integration in the MX610 mouse isn’t particularly unique.

One of the main features that Logitech is promoting is the mouse’s ability to automatically turn on/off based on the system settings. This is an excellent feature, as it will increase the battery lifespan significantly. Moreover, there’s also a battery indicator that will alert you when batteries are low.

The MX610 also has a Tilt Wheel Plus Zoom feature, which lets you zoom in while using the tilt wheel. Again, it’s a useful feature, but something that’s already present on a number of Logitech (and other) mice. The same is the case with Forward, Back and Volume control buttons. Although Logitech decided against the idea of these buttons in its G5 and G7, since they were gaming rather than multimedia mice, these buttons are indeed back. Back when we evaluated Logitech’s MediaPlay mouse, it was designed to function both as a standard mouse as well as a remote control for Windows Media Center PC and other multimedia applications. Unfortunately, the play/pause, and fast forward/backward buttons are not present to completely turn the MX610 into a hybrid unit, which is understandable. After all, it doesn’t make sense to inner compete within Logitech’s own product line.

All these standard features aside, what has us impressed are the e-mail and IM notification buttons. Though the idea behind them is simple, it’s interesting how Logitech comes up with such exclusive features. Basically, you will have to configure the indicators to alert you when you receive an e-mail and/or an IM message from the person of your choice. The buttons will alert you by lighting up, and lead you directly to the message once you press them. This is an excellent feature if you rely on instant communication and are expecting an important message from someone. With these indicators, you won’t have to keep checking back periodically for that one important message, as you’ll be able to quickly glance over the indicators and get back to work. Some of you might think of this as an unnecessary feature to market the mouse, but remember that these minute things can very well turn out to be an absolute must have things once you’ve gotten used to them.

The suggested retail price of the MX610 laser cordless mouse $59.99.
