(Interview Series) - After we published our interview with Logitech in regards to their laser gaming mice and the problems they were having with tracking surfaces, Razer contacted us to present their point-of-view on the subject. If you read our interview with Logitech, you’ll realize that Razer remedied much of the surface tracking problems by issuing a firmware upgrade, which is currently not possible with Logitech mice due to quality assurance issues, according to Logitech. However, the world’s most influential peripherals maker could look at this solution down the road. In a brief commentary, Razer confirmed that the current variant of laser technology does indeed work best with smooth surfaces, but similar to Logitech, it’s working on supporting as many tracking surfaces as possible. Instead of altering various settings in the software to remedy the tracking issue, Razer has issued a firmware to distribute more power to the laser, which does improve compatibility. However, that’s just the beginning of Razer’s attempt to get the most out of the immature state of laser technology for mice at the moment. A Razer representative confirmed that the company is thinking about issuing firmware updates for specific tracking surfaces, but it’s still in the discussions state and nothing is finalized yet. With that said, we are opening our inboxes for reader questions. If you would like to ask Logitech or Razer questions regarding laser technology in gaming mice, or anything else for that matter, please drop us a line and we’ll do our best to get them answered for you.
