(Review) - After years of wait, the ever popular DualShock controller is back for the PS3 as DualShock 3. The controller is very much like its predecessor, DualShock 2, with the same aesthetics and the true Sony-style look. But naturally, the key factor to note is the force feedback option that was missing from the original controller. As many of you remember, Sony was involved in a lawsuit with Immersion, the company that patented the force feedback technology, and as such, Sony had to skip this feature to avoid further legal ramifications.
It’s not like gaming enthusiasts never had the option of a force feedback controller, however. Nyko’s Zero has always been an option, but it’s another $50 that goes out of your pocket. Sony will offer the DualShock 3 for $55 going forward, but it will eventually discontinue its standard controller and package it with DualShock 3, a much better option for all gamers.
In addition to force feedback, it’s also wireless with Sixaxis motion-sensing feature. Unfortunately, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery isn’t removable and Sony doesn’t include the USB cable to recharge the controller. It’s a half-hearted effort on Sony’s part to independently retail the controller. What’s up with the lack of accessories to make the controller work? For $55, that’s the least we expect.
From a performance standpoint, force feedback adds a new uumph to first person shooters and makes them lively to play.
Overall, a standard but welcomed addition to PS3. Now only if Sony would drop the price to sweeten the deal.
