Plextor is known for high-quality yet expensive CD/RW/DVD/RW drives. They have maintained an admirable status in the optical storage market, which have led them to their astounding reputation and success amongst the computer enthusiasts. What makes their drives to expensive? There are quite a few things that lead to high prices, but for Plextor - one of the key factors have to be their enthusiast friendly PlexTools software. Plextor must have put a lot of financial resources into this software, which ultimately increased the price of the drive. PlexTools, in simpler terms, can be considered as a GUI based BIOS for Plextor drives. It has various integrated features that leads to high performance gains only on Plextor drives. Secondly, the amount of software they include with their products is remarkable. Almost all of their packaged software are full versions of high-quality applications that other manufacturers choose not to include. Of course, this lowers the price for similarly featured drives, but for the most part Plextor has the best value.

12X DVD writers are currently the sizzling sensation of the optical storage market and Plextor was the first one to introduce their PX-712A 12X DVD writer to the market. What we will take a look at today is a PATA version of their 12X writer. Plextor has recently released a SATA version of the same writer, which will analyze in the near future. Without further ado, let's begin...

Accessories:

Plextor has included a plethora of accessories with the PX-712A drive. The packaged contents include - Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 6, Roxio PhotoSuite 5 SE, Roxio DVDMax Player, Dantaz Retrospect back-up utility, a blank DVD+R media, a Quick Start Guide, few ATAPI cables, mounting screws, and an emergency eject pin.

All of the software applications are full versions except for Dantz Retrospect back-up utility. We believe the reason for not including the full version of Retrospect is its high price. Regardless, the entire software suite is very much appreciated as it will let you do just about everything you want.

The Quick Guide, although not needed, will help you troubleshoot the drive with necessary instructions. It is well-published and simple enough for everyone to follow. We have always been impressed by Plextor's included contents and the overall value they add to their drives, and certainly the PX-712A's package is no exception.
