The competition between ATI and NVIDIA is now fiercer than ever. ATI was the leader in the marketplace for over a year, but with the introduction of next generation of GPUs, NVIDIA is really starting to dominate the market. NVIDIA is back in the market with full force and ATI is slowly taking the back seat in few of its product lines, namely it’s mid-end graphics card lines. We have evaluated NVIDIA’s 6800 graphics cards previously and have been quite impressed with the overall performance. This time, however, we have changed tracks and will cover ATI’s very own X800 Pro graphics card. ATI’s X800 Pro graphics card is the low-end model of ATI’s three offerings, X800 Pro, X800 XT, and X800 XT PE. Since the competition between the two companies is tough, both have released numerous products in the market to unnecessarily confuse end consumers.

Is there truly a need to compete against each other with products like 6800 GT and X800 XT? After all, the only difference between 6800 GT and X800 XT and their flagship predecessors is the lower clock speeds. Now, please remember that we are asking this question from a business point-of-view. End-consumers may get confused with the model names, but they are certainly benefiting from it. From a practical and savings standpoint, you can purchase a 6800 GT or X800 XT and overclock it to meet higher performance demands, which is certainly appreciating.

We have already discussed the poor chip yields from both graphics giants and don’t feel the need to repeat ourselves. All we request is that both ATI and NVIDIA should try to get their high-end products to the market as soon as possible. There have already been reports that NVIDIA is back in momentum with its 6800 Ultra units and we are expecting ATI to make such statements reasonably soon as well.

As stated earlier, X800 Pro is ATI’s low-end card of their high-end product line, which is designed to compete against NVIDIA’s 6800 (standard version) card. Will ATI hold-up against NVIDIA? How well does the two titans compete against each other? Read on and find out…
