(Insider Series) - So why did AMD launch a dual-core processor in the FX range? We asked AMD to clarify the naming scheme, but knowing the standard marketing comments, we knew there was much to introducing a dual-core under the FX brand than what AMD was telling us. AMD initially said that since games were now starting to take advantage of dual-core environment, it was the right time to launch the FX60, which is true, but it didn't answer our question.

If games are getting dual-core optimized, which they are undoubtedly, then why can't AMD retail dual-core processors under the X2 brand? After needling our contact, AMD finally admitted that the FX series of dual-core CPUs will cater to the huge cult following that the brand (FX) enjoys. Apparently, gamers trust the brand so much (rightfully so) that AMD wanted to capitalize on that.

With that said, it's important to note that the next iteration, the FX62, is not going to be based on the 939 socket, so whatever upgrade you do now will be obsolete in about 3-4 months maximum.
