(Special Report) - At CES 2007, Seagate discussed and revealed information regarding its Maxtor acquisition and transition. Obviously it seems redundant for Seagate to offer similar product lines under two separate brands. Seagate, however, said it has clearly distinguished between the strengths and weaknesses of the two companies and plans to move forward accordingly. For instance, Maxtor was more of a leader in backup, higher capacity drives than it was in personal drives. Seagate, on the other hand, leads the personal drive market and is not viewed as a backup drive manufacturer. Therefore, Seagate is going to promote and associate the Maxtor line of backup products with Maxtor, under a separate brand name. And Seagate will continue to retail personal desktop and mobile hard drives under its own brand. That way, it can leverage both brands.
