Kensington's Trendy Wireless Notebook Mouse for Women
(Special Report) - We highlighted the trend for consumer electronics for women last year, and the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show was full of gadgets for the opposite sex. Now that consumer electronics are getting sleeker and sexier, the theory behind releasing two separate versions (for men and women) is fairly straightforward. You would expect that women will automatically gravitate towards shinier gadgets, but companies feel that it’s important to highlight the differences and custom made CE devices for both sexes and target them appropriately. If you can target two sexes in nearly all industries successfully, why leave the personal tech sector alone, right?
Motorola was one of the first few CE device makers that poorly segregated the two by releasing different colored versions of the RAZR cell phone. And they couldn’t go wrong with a pink phone. Soon after, other companies followed with their own pink versions of phones as well as other electronics. You know, it would be great if companies could get past the pink vs. blue theme and do something unique.
Thankfully, Kensington was one of the better ones with a mobile mouse for women. It’s still pink, but the exterior of the device is more interesting to look at, thanks to a few minor updates to the design. That’s really all it takes. The mouse operates on two AA batteries that are stored in the mouse. You need to push both sides simultaneously to slide open the backdoor. In addition, Kensington is going to donate $125,000 to fight Breast Cancer, a leading cause of death among women. A lot of companies in the technology industry have adopted a charity or a cause that they donate part of the receipts to (or a one-time donation), and as far as we are concerned, that’s always a noble thing to do, regardless of how the product performs.
