How To: Choose The Right Video Card

Many of you might be wondering why the heck I am even writing this article. Surely everyone knows how to choose a video card and it is not such a big deal. Well, think again. I have couple of friends who don’t know how to buy computer parts. Whenever they are looking to upgrade any one of the components in their PC, they just go to the store like CompUSA, BestBuy, etc. and get the best of the best components. There’s nothing wrong with buying best components in fact, many of us thinks that this is always the best idea to buy best of the best that is out there. Maybe this is true for hardware fanatics like us but what about people who don’t play heavy graphics and CPU hungry games like quake 3, or UT or any other game. Do they really need a 9800 Pro graphics card and a 3.06Ghz CPU?

Here are my opinions on what graphic cards you should have for the following things:

1.Server: You don’t need a 9800 Pro graphics card if you are running or planning to run a small FTP server or a mail server even a gaming server. You can probably deal get away with a 32MB TNT or lesser than that.

2.WebSurfing, Typing, & Email: Once again, you don’t need the best of the best video card that is out there. You as well can handle a card with 32MB or even less than that.

3.Small Games: If you are only playing games that came with windows or you just downloaded some free legal games from the Internet then those games won’t require you to have a strong video card. You can get away with 32MB again.

4.Huge Games: If you play Quake 3, Unreal Tournament 2003, and such games then these will require you to have a very fast and strong video card but that does not necessarily mean that you need a 9800 Pro or Nvidia’s 5900 Ultra. You can easily get away with 9700 pro, 9500 pro, and Ti4400-Ti4800.

5.Graphic Designing/Intense Video Work: If you do this type of work you probably require the best of the best video cards but like with huge games you can also get away with 9700 pro, 9500 pro, and Ti4400-Ti4800.

These are all just opinion since I have realized that people buy top of the link graphics cards but they never actually utilize their ultimate power. Now you might be thinking, why can’t we buy the newer and latest one’s like 9800 Pro with 256MB and Nvidia’s 5900 Ultra Cards? Well, here’s the thing, you can buy whatever you want since it is your money but you might as well spend your hard earned money on a computer case or on a bigger and faster hard drives.

There is not need for the top of the line graphic cards right now since no program today can use the card’s full potential. By the end of this year when Doom 3 and other games start to come out then you can think about getting these top of the line video cards since these games will need all the power your computer has.
