Apple has published the iPhone 4 and iOS 4.0 user guide for everyone to sift through as you wait to receive your iPhone 4 devices. It’s available in a PDF format online. The guide consists of 28 chapters, or 243 pages, that’s full of information. This information includes compatibility information, physical attributes of the iPhone 4 and host of other information. Just as we suspected, the white version of the iPhone 4 ran into last minute manufacturing problems that Apple didn’t anticipate. That’s why they weren’t available for pre-order earlier in the month and won’t be until mid-July, Apple confirmed in a statement earlier today. Bummer. If anything, this increases the value of the white version compared to the now standard black model in some odd way.

Apple’s previous generation iPhone may have made Verizon uncomfortable during the Droid X launch. The device with its 4.3-inch display is relatively bigger, looks similar to the HTC EVO 4G, but put against the iPhone, the difference isn’t quite as much. Verizon PR didn’t think so. When a 9to5Mac reporter decided to compare the two devices next to each other on video, the Verizon PR rep quickly removed the offending device, the iPhone, out of the viewing angle and recommended that the reporter only record the Droid X. That was a great opportunity for Verizon to up sell on the Droid X’s competitive advantages over the iPhone. Or not.

This is an interesting situation. A number of iPhone 4 devices are dropping the signal when consumers hold the phone in their hands. It’s unclear why that is the case, but it appears to be a relatively prominent problem. Apple hasn’t officially commented on the problem; however, some users believe it’s just a display issue and the signal is fine. Others note that when the bars disappears, the device drops ongoing calls. Only Apple devices would have problems like these. We suppose this comes with pushing the envelope with innovation.

Apple’s new iPhone 4 is surprisingly strong, at least compared to the previous 3G and 3GS models. iFixYouri did a drop test on the new device and found it to be fairly drop resistant. The first couple of times, the phone experienced minor scratches and kept working. The third time it turned off, it looks like but probably still worked. It’s unclear from the video below. It took a fourth major drop for the display to crack, but the phone might still have been working internally. Not bad for a device that’s nearly all glass.

Web apps are easier to manage and update for companies, Google says. After releasing an updated version of Gmail’s Web client for the iPad, the search giant hinted that it’s better to have robust Web apps that are easier to update and make changes to than native apps. That makes sense. Instead of waiting for the company to update the app, do extensive Q&A testing, issue an update and make the new version available for download, Web apps are more instantaneous and users get to experience the new changes right away. Point for Google for making a valid case against native apps. Google raises a good point about the flexibility of Web apps. Of course, Web apps may not be the best solution for every kind of app in the market.

Google’s popular email client, Gmail, received a face lift earlier today specifically for the iPad. Before, the Web version of Gmail had a two-column view which displayed your inbox and the compose window by splitting the display in two. Now, the iPad will depict a dedicated view for the compose window, making it easier to write emails. Google also said this change in Gmail reflects the power of creating mobile-friendly, browser-only Web apps as it allows companies to make changes instantly without the need to download updates.

The ever popular online radio service, Pandora, is available for download with a new version that takes advantage of iOS 4.0’s multitasking capabilities. This a great feature for Pandora as a service that will allow it to stream more tracks to mobile users. And for mobile users, this means you will be able to listen to music while writing emails, playing with Facebook or doing a host of other activities. Your iPhone 4 just got closer to becoming a mobile PC.

Apple has released iBooks for iPhone in iOS 4.0 earlier today, just like the company promised at WWDC 2010. It comes with PDF support and cross-syncing with the iPad and iPod touch devices, which should make transitioning from one device to another easier as you go through digital books. It also comes bundled with new features that Apple revealed at the developer conference – bookmarks and notes.
