With a slew of pink RAZR phones, Motorola now plans to offer a pink version of its recently announced PEBL cell phone. I’m thinking the idea is to target teenage girls and young female audience with a pink phone, as that appears to be a stereotypical color choice for women in that age bracket. As I mentioned back in January, the recent trend in consumer electronics is to not only make them feature rich, but also sleek and sexy to capture the female audience. According to CE companies we talked to at CES, women generally feel that companies target men with CE devices by focusing too much on features and specifications and not enough on the outer appeal. That’s not to say that women don’t care about the critical aspects of the device, but as we generally know, women have a higher fashion IQ than men, so the argument fits well, I must confess. Either way, Motorola is persistent on catering to this audience, and thus feel the need to release a pink version of the PEBL, though I certainly hope that the company doesn’t go haywire and release three variants of pink, similar to its RAZR series.
