I don’t know what to call this. Would it be a Tablet, a notebook or a full blown desktop? So, Toshiba is feeling Nintendo’s design apparently with this PDA + e-Book device. Toshiba is calling it a Dual Display PDA (e-Book) with SD Memory Card. It’s a concept from Toshiba, and in case you haven’t figured it out, it’s a PDA + e-Book device with dual displays, sort of like the Nintendo DS, except it’s much bigger and will cost a ton more. From the images, it seems you can run Windows CE on it, and it will be available with a stylus. By the way, I should mention this: there’s no way to know how big the actual design is. There are no images that put this “revolutionary” gadget from Toshiba in scale perspective. It comes with a SD memory card expansion slots, thereby making storage a somewhat of an unlimited option. Would I want this hybrid? Not really. I personally have a BlackBerry and a lot of people I know also have Palm Treos. Both of these devices offer web browsing and from what I have experienced, these devices are enough to satisfy me as far as reading is concerned. For busy professionals, reading a book is out of question on flights or wherever, since you will always have something to keep track of. If travelers are out of the question, who do we have left? I hope Toshiba won’t go through the trouble of releasing this device for orthodox book-reading people. Not there’s anything wrong with those people, but if they like to read books, chances are they choose not to be as digitally acute (either because they are not as technologically savvy or because they try to relax from all the gadgets they might have to use in their lives daily) as people who would much rather watch movies or listen to music on long flights. Potential availability and pricing information is unavailable, of course. Read - Subscribe to CoolTechZone.com's Techblog RSS Feed  {moscomment}

LaCie has added a desktop version to its SAFE line of biometric disk drives, which currently includes notebook drives as one of the security flavors. The biometric fingerprint scanner can store up to 10 fingerprints and can allow up to five individuals to access the drive. You can also limit access to certain parts of the drive depending upon the user. It’s sort of like the user and administrator differentiator in Windows XP. Interestingly enough, the drive also has a chain lock fitting for you to physically keep the drive chained to the PC (you must have some very critical data for you to do that). Unfortunately, the company doesn’t provide a chain in the package. Writing that statement almost made me laugh. The drive is available in 160GB, 320GB and 500GB and will cost $179, $219 and $369, respectively. Read - Subscribe to CoolTechZone.com's Techblog RSS Feed  {moscomment}

Apple (being its usual Apple self) has sent out invitations to its upcoming event on Sept. 12. As soon as the invitations are sent out, the media, analysts and users go haywire with speculations. Not that it’s much of a surprise, that’s Apple’s creative strategy, of course. By the way, did I mention this before? Apple’s PR people are very creative and ridiculously smart, more so than Google, and everyone thought Google hired the best people. The invitation only states: “It’s showtime” and that’s good enough for the rumor mill to start churning at full speed. Everyone believes Apple will be revamping its iPod product line and release an updated version. There is also speculation of the iTunes Movie Store launch. Um…didn’t everybody know this already? By the way, for the investors reading this, this is one of the few announcements that move the stock price. Based on rumors and that special invite, Apple’s stock price jumped 4.5 percent today. All in all, it was a good day for Apple. Read - Subscribe to CoolTechZone.com's Techblog RSS Feed  {moscomment}

Can someone tell me this: why was Microsoft going crazy over nothing a week or so ago when Amazon.com published the official pricing information on Windows Vista? It’s not like Microsoft was going to announce lower than published prices anyways. I have been noticing Microsoft’s attitude problems lately, and they are very discouraging. Anytime a stable report hits newswires, Microsoft is quick to announce: “We’ll launch Vista when we are ready.” Then the same thing happened with Amazon’s price leaks. What’s up with the attitude, guys? If you haven’t realized, we, as your customers, are waiting for the OS, so we can purchase it and use it. You don’t have to show us an attitude. Just because you can’t come up with products on time, it doesn’t make it our fault. Back on topic, the prices Amazon revealed were spot on. Vista will retail between $199 and $399 for full versions, while upgrades will range from $100 and $259. Pretty stale news, nothing from Microsoft as far as the surprise element is concerned. Firefox went from 11.3 to 11.8 percent in a month. Apple’s Safari also saw an incline to 3.21 percent, up .03 percent and Opera to .64 percent, up .05. Both Microsoft and Firefox are working on releasing updated versions of their browsers, which should ignite the browser wars again. Availability on both browsers is unknown at this time.
