Walmart has acquired Vudu, an also-ran video service that struggled to take off, for a reported $100 million in a cash transaction. Earlier rumors placed the deal price at $50 million just a couple of months ago, AllThingsD sources report. The company raised at least $21 million in funding from Benchmark Capital and Greylock Partners.

The reason why Walmart decided to acquire the company is because Vudu was able to convince the company of its proprietary video compression technology. Although the company’s set-top box business never took off, it did sign deals with TV manufacturers like Samsung and LG to provide thousands of movies at the touch of a button once the TV was connected to the Internet.

There were multiple bidders for the company, including Cisco. Walmart and Vudu has started notifying Hollywood studios of the deal, and Walmart is expected to enter the media streaming business, presumably with more leverage, since the retail giant sells more DVDs than any other company, making it a favorite for studios that still rely on physical DVD sales for majority of their revenue.

After the launch of its Zen line of compact music players, Creative has announced another contender to take on Apple’s value-oriented iPod music player. The new checkered design is interesting, but we just aren’t too fond of it. It looks too amateur, and frankly, we expected better from Creative. Sure, other Zen music players aren’t exactly Oscars worthy in design either, but we liked them better, if for nothing else but their simplicity, than Mosaic.

(Review) – After the launch of its Zen line of compact music players, Creative has announced another contender to take on Apple’s value-oriented iPod music player.

Available in black, gray and pink, it offers a variety of shades per color and consumes the entire device. It’s a different design certainly, but just not quite up to our expectations. The controls buttons, of which there are nine in total, are located right below the display in nine checkered boxes. The controls include four directional arrows and four shortcut keys for play/pause, a dedicated back button, a contextual menu and a shortcut menu. The keys are slightly difficult to press if you have large fingers, since they are so close to each other, but for the price tag that Mosaic falls under, perhaps we can let it slide. And finally, then there’s the headphones jack and a USB port at the bottom, a great location for both.

Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro Earphones Review

On the user interface side, Creative is as solid as ever. There are a number of themes available for personalization and moving content back-and-forth off the player is super easy. For Windows users, you can mostly drag-and-drop content, or sync it using Windows Media Player or Rhapsody without installing a piece of software. How great is that! That’s for audio and other content, such as images. Going through images is quite interesting as well. If they are sorted out in folders, you can go through folders, and "click" on thumbnails to view larger versions. The device also supports slideshows and photo viewing capabilities with music playback. Moreover, you get a somewhat split screen to go through your photos, video images and photos when you are browsing a specific media group.

Life is good on the content side, except when it comes to video. That’s when you need to install the included Creative Centrale software to convert standard video to make it compatible with Mosaic. It’s Windows-only for now, but it gets the job done. Another program, ZenCast, is also available for managing podcasts, including subscribing, organizing and transferring. It’s not included in the software bundle, but it can be downloaded from Creative’s Website separately.

On the features front, you get access to the standard audio options, AVI for video, which must be converted and JPEG for photos. Although there’s no line-in recording for audio or video, you do get a built-in Mic for voice recording with an FM tuner with autoscan and 32 preset stations. Unfortunately, there’s no room for storage expansion through SD. You are limited to the size you get: 2GB or 4GB. In addition, you have access to the standard calendar and contact management aspect of the interface. Then there are the nine preset EQ options, a five-band, user-defined mode, and a bass boost option to customize audio. Not to mention, Creative has even included an external speaker on the back to share your music with friends. Naturally, it’s only decent.

Creative’s Mosaic performs exceptionally well on the performance front with superb audio and crystal audio quality. Very clear. Bass does well, too, with solid thumps in our test track. However, make sure to pair it with a great pair of earphones for maximum enjoyment. Thanks to full volume, it was a great experience. The audio player is rated for 36 hours of audio and 5 hours of video, which also did well with quality, but obviously, there is some pixilation present there.

For $59.99 for the 2GB version, this is a great alternative to Apple’s iPod offerings, if you are in the market for one. We aren’t too fond of the design, but it’s performance is unlike any other – excellent!

(Column) – In the past, it seems like there has been a lot of angst surrounding the idea of dual-licensed software gaining any real traction. But after researching this, I think it has a real shot at giving traditional commercial-only software a run for its money. Even if it is simply in the long tail markets

Keeping the Hot Side Hot And the Cold Side Cold. Thinking back to a popular fast food chain’s slogan for a new sandwich at the time, by keeping the two sides separate, the fast food chain was able to take something that was not really "new" and make behind the product a whole lot better. I see the same approach becoming successful with Open Source and commercial software. Let me explain.

If a company opts to provide their product under a viable open source license, thus keeping true to making its code freely available – no excuses, generally speaking, they can hold true to the ‘do no evil" mindset. For instance, if the consumer market was the target for a specific company, then it makes a lot of sense to release an open source "version" of the product to that group as a means for word of mouth buzz, in addition to simply showing that the company in question is not trying to restrict or hide the code of their software.

Is Selling Linux Evil?

On the commercial side of the fence, it could be possible to then implement options that are better suited for another market, not just "better features" overall. For instance, let’s say that a software offering allows users to collaborate socially like you see with many of the various social networks today. But then targeting the enterprise market, there would a possible need to pursue various localized collaboration options; in this case, the software vendor may opt to take a commercial approach. Not always, but it is becoming more common lately.

Dual-Licensing Should Never Be About Providing Features. Once we understand that the focus, as with any software project, must remain on the user, dual licensing becomes a little less fuzzy.

The fact is that a company can, in many instances, successfully deploy dual-licensing when they use a 100 percent open source product to target open source software fans, yet recoup any in-house development costs, and heaven forbid, turn a profit via their commercial efforts targeted at another group of users altogether.

Open Source Should Be Free: End of Discussion. Without a question, there are going to be those who are steadfast in their belief that open source products need to be free in cost, not just free as in free code. Commercialized code, even if there is a non-commercialized alternative, is not the end the world. It is merely a matter of different strokes for different folks. Much like one would argue open source code usage in the restricted OS X operating system.

Linux and OS X appeal to different markets altogether, so I would pose to you that in many ways, a duel-licensed product has the same thing going for it.

In the long term, duel licensing is going to become more palatable amongst companies that at one time were exclusively using closed source licenses exclusively. But only time will tell, I suppose.

Click here to get the latest prices on Asus Eee Linux notebook!

Logitech continues to expand its portfolio of desktop keyboard and mice for the Mac, and the same holds true with the diNovo Edge. After announcing the Windows version, Logitech now offers a Mac version with its very own OS X specific keys, including the Control, Option and Command keys. The keys are well spaced, and typing is satisfying. The keyboard offers a mixture of notebook and desktop style keys, which makes for an interesting mix and a satisfying experience, as stated above.

Logitech diNovo Edge Mac Edition

(Review) – Logitech continues to expand its portfolio of desktop keyboard and mice for the Mac, and the same holds true with the diNovo Edge.

Like a lot of Logitech products, the diNovo Edge is equipped with a trackpad, appropriately named the TouchDisc, which lets you scroll and navigate from your keyboard. This is a very cool addition to the otherwise traditional keyboards. Add in the wireless connectivity option, and you can now use the keyboard to navigate through your media on the fly. So far so good.

In addition to the added functionality with TouchDisc, there are Hotkeys that directly launch Mail, Safari, iTunes and other applications. Not to mention, with the included software utility, you can customize a variety of functions right from your desktop, including the sensitivity options for the TouchDisc.

Kensington SlimBlade Media Mouse Review

The volume slider is also present, and it, too, functions when you slide your finger on a non-tactile surface. Unfortunately, however, we had a difficult time getting the volume slider to work properly. The slider took a few strokes to get the volume to hit max or min. A single stroke would’ve sufficed.

In addition to the usefulness of additional features, the keyboard is wireless, and the beauty of it all is that there’s no USB wireless dongle to deal with anymore, thanks to Apple’s integrated Bluetooth receiver. Add that to the charging base, and diNovo Edge for the Mac appears to be a winner.

There are a couple of things we need look at, though, before making the final call. The charging base is good, but it’ll take additional desk space. Couldn’t Logitech somehow make the process simple and less space consuming? Perhaps. Then it’s the looks factor. The Logitech diNovo Edge is a winner on all style angles for sure, but it doesn’t match well with Apple’s color scheme. Perhaps a white keyboard would’ve done the trick? As it stands now, while the keyboard has a great awe factor for Windows users, it doesn’t do justice to Apple products.

From a performance standpoint, Logitech is again a winner, unsurprisingly.

For $159.99, the diNovo Edge is expensive. A little too much. While it’s a great product for the most part, we’d recommend waiting for the price to drop before opting to purchase one. They drop in price fairly quickly. And a heartfelt congratulation goes out to Logitech for another job well done!

That continues to hold true for the company’s newly announced Triple.fi 10 earphones. The pair is designed to look attractive with Gun Metal Blue color scheme and surprisingly large earbuds. They are large enough (1-inch length, 0.5-inch width) that we have never seen anything like this before. Interesting. Then there’s the durable cable with Y separator to prevent the unit from tangling in storage or during use.

On the technical side, the earphones are equipped with three individual speakers per earbud and an integrated passive crossover circuit board that directs the low-end frequencies to a dedicated speaker for improved bass quality.
From a performance standpoint, Triple.fi 10 sounds excellent. They are the best there is. In our music tests, they sounded superb with not a single flaw that we could note. Bass was strong and sound was as crystal clear as possible. In other words, Triple.fi 10 is as perfect a product as it could get. On the fitting front, however, the earphones caused trouble. Due to their large size, users with small or average ears will have a problem fitting them properly. That’s never good. Specific eartips didn’t quite help in this situation.

That’s of course to prevent a lot of folks from unlocking their iPhones.

In this review, we’ll touch on the new features that are available with the second-generation iPhone, instead of discussing every feature there is, even if it’s ported from the 2.5G iPhone. That’s to keep things interesting and upbeat around here. For our original iPhone review, please click here.

Perhaps the first thing you’ll notice is the updated looks. Amazing is all we have to say for it. In our opinion, it’s sleeker than the original iPhone with glossy black and white distinct color schemes. The body is curved slightly around the back with metallic buttons to give the phone a new aura of high-ended-ness. And it works. The curved body was a bit annoying, since the phone wobbled when we put it on a flat surface. It was amusing in the beginning, but it quickly lost its humor factor. The camera lens on the back, volume rocker and ringer on/off switch on the left spine, a 3.5mm headphones and standby button on the top and a charging dock at the bottom are all in their respective positions. All in all, a very similar physical design.

Features are where the new iPhone 3G shines. To start off with, as the moniker suggests, it supports 3G, unlike a lot of other smartphones. 3G is equivalent to broadband speeds on a mobile device, and needless to say, it’s fast. Very fast. We managed to secure speeds of 500kbps and beyond. Now, of course, speeds fluctuated here and there, but for the most part, Web pages loaded amazingly fast and the performance was excellent. Sites that would normally take upwards of 30 seconds to load on EDGE took 12-15 seconds over 3G. A boost of 50 percent. Downloads also took a considerably short time. In other words, 3G is certainly a better option compared to EDGE, but you might want to check the performance in your area by walking into an AT&T or Apple Store and trying the device out for yourself.

It’s super easy to get connected with your office back-end in only a few minutes. However, there are a number of caveats to note. You can only connect to one Exchange server on iPhone 3G. This isn’t a problem for many users, but it’s something to keep in mind when making up your mind about the new iPhone. Moreover, there’s only one calendar and contacts list to sync. Try syncing your personal and work calendars and one of them will be overwritten. Syncing was superb, but there were hiccups and delays here and there when we switched connections from Wi-Fi to 3G or vice versa. When the iPhone reestablished a connection, messages came in bulk.

Folder structuring is also supported naturally and the iPhone did a great job of managing that. And obviously support for MobileMe and the App Store is there as well.

Continuing on with the additional feature set, the iPhone 3G is equipped with an actual GPS chip on the phone for real-time driving directions and for finding point-of-interests. Of course, the directions aren’t turn-by-turn, but you can’t expect much from a mobile device. However, thanks to satellite pinpointing, a blue dot follows your location on the integrated map to give you a sense of where you are. It’s very accurate as long as you are connected to the satellite. Lose your satellite connection and you’ll be relying on cell phone towers to triangulate your position. We could never make that work, and it’s not accurate at all.

The iPod and video player integration are magnificent, just like they were back with the original iPhone. There’s no improvement with the camera either. A pity, really!

With iPhone 3G, the features list continues with Contacts search. You can enter the first few letters of the contact you are trying to find, and the results are real-time. Good! You can now view iWork documents and PowerPoint right on the phone; however, you can’t edit them. There’s a Scientific Calculator in portrait mode. When you turn the phone sideways, it adds additional keys and functions to the calculator, a nice bonus with use for a Scientific Calculator. At last, you can remotely wipe your iPhone’s data incase you lose it or it’s stolen, and capture screenshots from a Web page by tapping on the image and directly saving it in the phone’s Photos folder.

{mospagebreak title=3. Continued…}

While the new iPhone packs a lot of new, robust features, it still lacks a number of things that we had hoped Apple would add in this model. These include the lack of copy-and-paste functionality, lack of stereo Bluetooth, video recording, multimedia messaging and Flash support for Web sites. We suppose you can’t have it all, despite the product coming from one of the greatest companies of all time.

Moving on to perhaps the most critical aspect of mobile handsets – call quality. It’s comparatively better than the first-generation iPhone. It’s loud enough and much clearer than previously. We loved it. Speakerphone wasn’t quite as great as we had hoped, but that’s attributed to the poor speaker quality, in our opinion. We experienced a substandard performance after pulling out our earphones and listened to music or watched a video through the speakers. It continues to disappoint us.

Battery life will be all over the map depending on the combination of usage. Rated for 5 hours of talk time with 3G and 10 hours for a regular cell tower; 6 hours of Internet time for Wi-Fi and 5 hours for 3G; 7 hours of video playback; 12.5 days of standby time and 24 hours of music playback. For all of our tests, we can confirm Apple’s specified battery life. They all fell in the range, give or take 5 percent.

All in all, Apple’s iPhone 3G is a great successor to the original iPhone, and it’s certainly worth the investment if you’ve been eyeing this particular mobile handset for a while. Although it’s still not quite perfect, it’s well on its way to be. With a 2-year AT&T contract, 8GB and 16GB models are available for $199 and $299, respectively. Without the contract, you are looking at $399 for 8GB and $499 for 16GB.

The Z9i is a successor to the original Z9, which made waves when it was first announced. For BlueAnt, it was an unexpected success, and for users, it was a delightful, unforgettable experience.

The Z9i brings a lot of the features of the original Z9 – same looks, great performance and a similar feature set. However, there are notable differences between the two that would make this product a worthy purchase. To start off with, Z9i can be connected to five devices as opposed to three, and it can connect to two vs. one headset at any given moment. The package includes two sized ear buds, small and large. The original Z9 only offered large. It’s available in two colors, glossy red and black vs. glossy black. And finally, a few updates to the application and the hardware for better audio quality. BlueAnt has updated the headset to include two microphones for better speech pickup and Voice Isolation Technology to suppress echos and extraneous noise cancellation. In fact, there are two modes to this technology: Standard and Max for normal and exaggerated effects. In our tests, the headset sounded great. Excellent audio! Unfortunately, turning the Standard mode on wasn’t effective at all. Setting the default to Max is your best bet. That’s when we really noticed the difference. The technology does indeed work; it’s just that one of the two modes isn’t as effective. Overall, excellent work from BlueAnt yet again.

The package contains a shirt clip and a translucent earclip to better hold the headset and offers different ringtones for known and unknown contacts.
All in all, BlueAnt has yet another winner on its hands, and we are delighted to recommend to anyone who’s in the market for a quality, sleek headset. For $67.99, it’s well worth the investment. Not too ago, I stumbled onto a post that was created by a rather irate blogger who felt that Ubuntu was getting the shaft. Apparently someone had decided to "sell" Ubuntu CDs, with packaging, on eBay. In this article, I want to seriously examine what, if any, harm was done here.

Get Angry the Right Way. Getting upset when someone sells an open source product is beyond stupid. As long as trademark, copyright and other licensing requirements are being met, then there is no problem. One example is Open Office. Last time I checked, as long as you used approved marketing materials with approved logos, they couldn’t care less how much you sell their CDs for. Why? Obviously because it means one less copy of MS Office in the hands of the user, that’s why!

Now we come back to the angry blogger and the sale of Ubuntu on eBay. If the blogger in question wanted to tackle the issue with any intelligence, they should have considered the obvious trademark violation and contacted Canonical about the matter. Looking at the eBay listing told me instantly that this was blatant trademark infringement.

Still think I’m splitting hairs on this issue? Think again. The fact is that the trademark argument will hold up a lot better than simply arguing that re-selling something is wrong based on the fact that it is otherwise available for free.

Click here to get the latest prices on Asus Eee Linux notebook!

{mospagebreak title=2. Continued…}

The Larger Issue At Hand. Not too long ago, I remember how people used to get upset over Linspire and Xandros selling copies of their distributions, while Novell, among others, were getting a free pass doing the same thing. All of the groups involved offered support for their products. And today, no one can seriously argue that Novell is less Microsoft-friendly than Linspire – they signed on similar dotted lines with Microsoft, people.

So why does it seem like Novell (SuSE) ended up off the hook? Simple, because at one time, Freespire and Xandros Open Circulation Edition did not exist – OpenSuSE did. What is interesting is that I’m 99 percent sure that at some level, this existed, as did the source code for Xandros. So could it be that the only real difference is that completed distributions of each release were not actively being given away? Think about it.

Let me provide you with another highly controversial example. Let’s say I take XYZ Distro, re-master it, verify that I’m in compliance with the GPL, any applicable trademarks and copyrights. Can I sell it? Of course I can. The real trick, however, is extending value far enough that a buyer interested in making the purchase.

In many cases, like selling Open Office, for example, it is merely making the potential buyer aware of the product. Lame? Of course, it is a weak sales model – sleazy even. Immoral? That is debatable. Considering the buyer is going to end up with a fantastic product, and that they are made aware of its free availability at the appropriate URL, nothing wrong has actually taken place here. The buyer has knowingly decided to go with the bottled water concept, instead of getting it for free from the "tap," so to speak.

Top 4 Browsers for Linux Reviewed

Bottled Water, Anyone? As many of the pre-installed distro options showing up in the big box stores have shown us, in this country, for non-geeks, Linux adoption means coming off the high horse and joining the bottled water crowd.

Obviously, other projects like PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu will attract many Windows converts with their own merit. But this is generally going to be a bigger hit with the Windows power user. Joe Average couldn’t care less about licensing, open source or other items of importance. Joe Average belongs to the bottled water crowd and will go for the path of least resistance. They want it easy, ready to go and lacking lame rubber stamps placed on anyone that disagrees with the elite, such as the term "FUD."

Commonsense users coming off of Windows are all too happy to drop their hard earned cash on a "made easy" distro that has everything working. And if that means having the hardware bundled along with it, from businesses like Best Buy, then all the better.

(Review) – When we first started evaluating Kensington products a few years ago, their products were very simple in design. Almost to the point of being considered last generation. In other words, they weren’t sexy at all. However, over the years, the company has worked on its designs a bit more to focus on the attraction value of its products. They are still simple, but they are drop dead gorgeous. Talk about a complete turnaround in its designs.

The SlimBlade media mouse is your regular mobile wireless mouse with 2.4GHz wireless strength with up to 30ft. in range. It has a glossy black exterior with a scroll wheel (360-degree scrolling) and left/right buttons on the top. So far so good. Everything is fairly standard.

But…wait for it…

Kensington Ci75 Wireless Notebook Mouse Review

Flip the mouse upside down and that’s where you’ll find the media navigation controls: play/pause, volume and track controls. The buttons are well integrated on the underside that they don’t interfere with the smooth gliding of the device. Yet, they are easy to work with at night.

The battery life is set to last for approximately six months, and the battery life indicator lights green if the battery is good, or red if it needs a replacement. Also, the mouse automatically goes to sleep to further conserve battery life with your laptop. How brilliant is that!

Overall, the performance was good. Ergonomics are similar to other notebook mice, which means it’s not as comfortable as its desktop counterpart, but it’ll do. Once you get used to it, it’ll be fine. The 1,000-dpi laser optical sensor was precise and accurate and will do just fine. Signal strength was excellent as well, and we had no issues connecting and reconnecting the mouse after it went to sleep or when we had to remove the USB connector to pack our notebook.

For $43.00, Kensington’s SlimBlade media mouse is a great buy that’s effective with its simplicity to design and its newfound attractiveness.

(Review) – Kensington’s Ci75 is another notebook mouse in the company’s portfolio with a simple twist. The way Kensington works is – they will make a change or two in a product and call it new. Usually the change isn’t even that significant, but that’s the company’s way of avoiding feature exhaustion in its peripherals. Whatever works, I guess.

Ci75 is your typical notebook mouse more or less. It integrates a scroll wheel and left/right buttons up top with a battery life indicator on the scroll wheel. However, what’s different is that the mouse is both wired and wireless. With a 1,000-dpi laser engine, the mouse works on a 27MHz wireless frequency for wireless support, but for an even robust operation, you can pull the wire out and make it an USB-powered mouse. Cool! The wireless connector gets stored underneath the mouse and has a "click" feel. Unfortunately, we noticed that the battery compartment cover came off too easily because it’s held in place with three tiny magnets.

With a sexy design, Kensington’s Ci75 is a great performer with strong signal strength, precise and accurate laser engine.
