| Sad news for all the Windows 98 and ME users, Intel's New Grantsdale and Alderwood chipsets will not run on Windows 98 and ME.
According to The Inquirer, Intel's Grantsdale and Alderwood chipsets will not have drivers for Windows 98/Me.
It’s a surprise that Intel is not going to support Microsoft Windows Me and 98 because Microsoft decided to offer more support for its earlier operating systems due to delays in the launch of Longhorn, Microsoft's next generation Operating System.
Grandsdale and Alderwood chipsets commercial names are i925X, i915P for discrete and i915G for the one with integrated graphics.
i915G and i915P (Grantsdale), i925X (Alderwood) and derivatives will bring the much awaited -
PCI Express x16 and x1 lanes for add-in cards, Dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM memory, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (i915G only), 4 Serial ATA-150, Azalia audio, Integrated WLAN with promising RAID technologies.
PCI Express is going to replace the aging PCI and also AGP. Like the Integrated graphic solutions in the 810 and 845 chipset series the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 also promises to give decent performance at an affordable price.
It will be up to the chipset makers like VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) to continue offering support to the Windows 98 and Windows ME.
Both these companies don’t plan to launch their chipsets until the third quarter.
For the moment it seems that the new chipset won’t be able to make budget users using older versions of windows happy as apart from the high price because of new technologies like PCI Express and DDR2 SDRAM inside, a new operating system will also be needed.
