VIA, Taiwanese chip and chipset maker, has announced the details of the company's upcoming C5J core processor. The new core is expected to bring security along with low-power consumption, low heat throughput, and small, low-priced integrated devices. VIA is following AMD and Intel on low heat throughput and low-power consumption startegy on consumer's demand.
The new chip was announced at the Embedded Processor Forum in California earlier this week. VIA reported the silicon of the processor will be developed using IBM's 90nm process technology in New York. The chip will be optimized for security and e-commerce transitions.
Glen Henry, President of Centaur Technology, the company acquired by VIA earlier, hopes to deliver cutting-edge performance to entertainment users while providing security simultaneously. Centaur Technology is also the producer of the new core.
Market Analysts and Researchers are little skeptical about the hardware security features that are packed inside the small, low-powered core. Analysts commented, the hardware security is reaching the high-end processors just now and is not to the perfect point and VIA announcing the high-end features in such a small core is a unique idea but not necessarily great.
The hardware features will allow for better hash algorithms, RSA encryption, and application-execution protection. The security is also expected to improve performance, according to VIA.
The future of VIA and IBM looks bright with VIA strongly entering the mobile market.
