Intel Corp., world's largest chip maker, today announced it's fourth 300mm facility that will start the production of 90nm process technology based products. The facility is located in Leixlip, Ireland. The fourth 300mm will make Intel the world's leader in 300mm wafer manufacturing capacity. Intel's third fab is used to manufacture the company's 90nm microprocessors. Intel's Pentium 4 Extreme Edition and Celeron-D chips are currently using the 90nm fabrication process. As we reported previously, Intel shipped more than 1 million Pentium 4 90nm units in the month of April. This was an all time set record, said Intel. Intel reports the larger 300mm wafers to be beneficial as it will significantly lower the production costs by as much as 30 percent per buyer. The new technology will use 40 percent less energy and water per microprocessor than the previous generation processors, said Intel, quoted by Xbit Labs. Intel's other 300mm fabrication facilities are based in Hillsboro, Oregon and Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
