| DVD Forum, a decision maker for optical storage formats, announced a new format in the market that will let manufacturers produce the special kind of compact discs. These discs will be playable in both CD players as well as DVD players. The new format will be called "DualDisc", which is a combination of CD and DVD discs. The step is taken to simplify the transition to DVD and DVD-Audio standards.
The "DualDisc" format will mainly combine two formats into one disc. On one side, there will be a standard 44.1 KHz CD, while the other side will feature a DVD format with 192 KHz frequency, digital high-quality video, and 5.1 surround sound.
One of the reasons to adopt this new technology is to reduce the cost of packaging and distribution for the seperate formats (CD and DVD). This will also make a flexible format for the consumers.
Content labels such as Sony Music, EMI, Bertelsmann Music Group, Warner Music Group and Universal stated that they would support the "DualDisc" format. In fact, some content labels starting producing products based on the "DualDisc" format before DVD Forum backend the standard.
