On Wednesday, Lindows announced its official name change. Lindows new name for its international consumers will now be Linspire due to Microsoft’s win in a trademark lawsuit. Lindows willingness to compete with Microsoft has led them to lawsuit battles with the software giant globally for over two years now; pretty much since Lindows first entered the software market.
Microsoft started filing lawsuits against Lindows due to Lindows closeness to Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Microsoft has been unsuccessful in the United States; however the software giant has been able to push Lindows in international courts, mostly in European countries such as Finland, Sweden, and Netherlands.
Lindows, now Linspire still have to face lawsuits in United States court in California. The court has delayed the hearing several times but the official date is expected somewhere in Q3 or Q4 of this year.
The company has changed it’s DNS to a new web address – www.linspire.com, however the index page of the website still has “Lindows.com” at the top left corner as the logo.
It will be tough for Lindows to try to stay afloat with two names and if the court rules in favor of Microsoft, Lindows will have to change it’s name to Linspire in the United States as well.
