Microsoft Corp., world's largest software maker, has decided to offer free software licenses for [cold servers] or networking computers that are kept off until they are needed, according to a report by Reuters.
This feature is part of Microsoft's Assurance licensing program, which was announced earlier this week. Microsoft wants to add more features to the program, hence the new feature.
According to Reuters, Microsoft started to offer its Software Licensing Assurance licensing program several years ago. This way consumers could pay for software over time and get technical support from Microsoft.
The free licenses feature is also a way for Microsoft to compete against Linux, which has gained popularity amongst enterprise consumers who are looking for affordable solutions.
The new software licensing features allow consumers to install Windows Server software products onto the backup computers that are used for disaster recovery.
