Samsung, world's top leader in memory chips, is increasing it's production of the GDDR3 memory chips due to the high demand from it's corporate consumers - ATi and Nvidia. Currently, Samsung is the only manufacturer producing these high-end GDDR3 chips for graphics cards. The GDDR3 256MB chips are rated at 500MHz, 600MHz, 700MHz and 800MHz. Samsung's GDDR3 memory chips are power efficient, which will aid video card makers ATi and Nvidia to produce mobile solutions for notebook computers and not to mention the speed gains for current 256MB cards and the upcoming 512MB cards. Samsung is using some DDR2 and newly developed technologies to produce these high-end modules. The chips will require 1.9v power supply for drive operation and for I/O interface.
As stated before, GDDR3 chips are being used on Nvidia's recently released GeForce 6800 Ultra and ATi upcoming X800-series video cards. Samsung is the only company producing memory chips that are going higher than 1.0 Ghz and for Samsung to announce 2.0 Ghz (1.0 Ghz physical speed) by the end of this year, confirms Korea Times, is impressive. Samsung will get an edge over it's competitors in the market.
