Research In Motion (RIM) is waiting for an answer from the U.S. Court of Appeals, which will determine if the Canada based company can retail one of the most popular emailing device in the market, BlackBerry. The company was brought to court due to patent infringement.
The firm was sued by technology patent company NTP for patent violation who now wants $53.7 million in damages. NTP also wants an injunction barring the sale of the BlackBerry device in the United States.
The injunction was put on hold and passed on to the appeals court, which will hear oral testimony from both sides starting Monday (today). RIM, in this appeal, will challenge eight patents by NTP.
NTP does not use the claimed technology to produce any products. The company was surprised when the United States government ordered BlackBerry for its staff after the Sept. 11 attacks. Many consumers relied on the product for communication as cell phone services were blocked.
